"When Ideas Become Crime"
CANAN and Nalan Yirtmaç are participating in the group show titled "When Ideas Become Crime" in DEPO. Curated by Halil Altindere, the exhibit brings together 48 Turkish artists from different generations, questioning the limits of freedom of expression. Canan takes place in the show with her new video legend "The Waqwaq Tree". The video, embracing a documentary style, begins with the story of this tree and the Janissary incident in the Ottoman times leading to the military strikes up to recent Turkish history. Nalan Yirtmaç, in her spray/stencil piece titled "In the name of the Destroyed Districts and the Displaced", criticizes the urban transformation projects focusing on the suburbs of Istanbul. Hüseyin Alptekin, Ramazan Bayrakoglu, Inci Furni, Nilbar Güres, Altan Gürman, Hakan Gürsoytrak, Gülsün Karamustafa, Ahmet Ögüt and Erinç Seymen are some of the other artists whose works will be displayed.
"When Ideas Become Crime" can be seen between September 1 - October 10, 2010.
